JOB OFFER EVALUATIONS
RMA has developed a 5-step process for assessing job offers. As you will note it is not the traditional model so often found on Career web sites. We believe many traditional methods of evaluating jobs are too oriented to "temporal" issues such as salary, benefits, or working atmosphere. Ultimately, however, the best salaries, benefits and working situations are attained by picking the right career paths and being successful at each job along the way. If you would like to incorporate the following elements into a spreadsheet type evaluation, you may request the Excel version by emailing info @ rmasearch.com
1. CAREER ENHANCEMENT
- How well does the experience in this job enable me to leverage and advance my career over next 3-7 years?
- Is the industry/field growing or contracting?
- Does the expertise involved help give me unique edges over others?
- Does the job box me into too narrow a specialty?
- Will the challenges involved help me grow professionally?
- Does the job provide good internal and external visibility?
- What would the logical next steps be after 2-3 years in this job?
2. CHANCES OF SUCCESS IN THIS JOB
- How well does my prior experience prepare me for this role?
- Are the new employers' expectations reasonable and attainable?
- Does the new employer provide proper resources and support?
- What external/economic obstacles beyond my control might hinder me?
3. CORPORATE MISSION and CULTURE
- Does the company have type of growth objectives that suit me?
- Can I feel good about company's products and client service?
- Do my business philosophies fit well with company's management and my immediate superiors?
- Does the company have a track record of promotion from within?
- What is likelihood of current management being in place in 5 years?
4. FINANCIAL REWARDS
- Is the compensation package market competitive?
- Will the package cause any financial sacrifices for me in short term?
- What are the long-term financial benefits (stock, deferred comp, bonuses) ? How realistic is it to attain these longer-term rewards?
5. LIFESTYLE CONSIDERATIONS
- Will the job involve a manageable amount of travel, commuting or overtime relative to my current family obligations?
- Are the working conditions at the job itself reasonable relative to my personal standards ?
HOW TO FIND OUT MORE THAN THE INTERVIEW TELLS YOU
- Talking to colleagues, friends, or acquaintances who have worked there. This obviously sheds light on personalities but be careful to look for factual information, not opinions that may be biased by their own experiences there.
- Talk to others who work on behalf of the company (attorneys, CPA's, consultants, vendors) to determine company's "modus operandi" with outsiders.
- Read industry-oriented financial reports to see how much business the company is doing. Do they walk the walk as well talk the talk?
